Accumulation and depuration of hydrocarbons in the mangrove oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae ArchiMer
Delcastillo, C; Corredor, J; Morell, J.
Adult specimens of Crassostrea rhizophorae were exposed to diesel oil dispersed in seawater. The experiment consisted of a 10 days contamination period and 15 days depuration period. Oyster samples were extracted, and analysed by gas chromatography and UV fluorescence spectroscopy. The concentrations of n-alkanes, branched alkanes, unresolved complex mixture (UCM) and aromatic hydrocarbons were determined. The oysters accumulated the hydrocarbons rapidly, reaching a maximum concentration of 387.5 ug/g (wet weight). After exposure to uncontaminated seawater, the oysters were able to reduce their hydrocarbon load to 5.6 ug/g. The data indicates that C. rhizophorae is capable of preferential accumulation and depuration of hydrocarbons. Apparently, the oysters...

Aquaculture of edible species in French Polynesia ArchiMer
Patrois, Jacques.
In French Polynesia, the research on rearing edible species has began in 1971. The aims were: to develop the local production of sea foods to satisfy the domestic market and to create new activities and employments in rural areas.

Essais d'infestations expérimentales entre Crassostrea rhizophorae et Carcinus maenas ArchiMer
Grizel, Henri; Tige, Gilbert.
Following our aim of developing oyster culture in French Guyana and studying the different options available to increase a stock of new oyster species, we were lead to search for possible parasites in Crassostrea rhizophorae. These oysters from the French Guyanese coasts host some gregarine Nematopsis sp. spores, characterized by Comps, Grizel and Tige (1972). Through this work, we conducted some experimental infestation trials between Crassostrea rhizophorae spats parasited by these spores and the most common crab on metropolitan farms Carcinus maenas.

Phylogéographie des huîtres de mangrove de l'Océan Atlantique Sud : C. gasar et C. rhisophorae ArchiMer
Heurtebise, Serge; Boutet, Isabelle; Verden, B.; Lapegue, Sylvie; Leitao, Alexandra; Thiriot-quievreux, Catherine; Garica, P.; Boudry, Pierre.
Mangrove oysters include various species that are also present on different coasts. In the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean, Crassostrea rhizophorae has been observed along the southern coast of America and Crassostrea gasar along the western coast of Africa. Fifteen populations of these oysters were sampled from these two geographic areas. Their polymorphism was studied on the 16S mitochondrial fragment both by par sequencing and RFLP analysis. Some samples' caryotype were also analysed. Two haplotypes were identified: C. gasar was found in Africa, but also for the first time in South America, whereas C. rhizophorae was only found on the coasts of South America.

Phylogeography of mangrove oysters from the Southern Atlantic ocean : Crassostrea gasar and Crassostre rhizophorae ArchiMer
Lapegue, Sylvie; Boutet, Isabelle; Leitao, Alexandra; Thiriot-quievreux, Catherine; Heurtebise, Serge; Garcia, P.; Boudry, Pierre.
Mangrove oysters encompass several species and their taxomony is unclear. Among then, Crassostrea rhizophorae has been described along the Central and South American Atlantic coasts and Crassostrea gasar along African Atlantic coasts. Most taxonomic studies have so far been based on morphological criteria which are particularly susceptible to plasticity and new insight can be provided by molecular markers. The present work aims to provide information on the phylogeography of these two taxa.

Preliminary assessment of the potential for mangrove oyster cultivation in Piraquê-açu river estuary (Aracruz, ES) BABT
Alvarenga,Luciana; Nalesso,Rosebel Cunha.
At Piraquê-açu river estuary, Aracruz, ES, the technical viability of Crassostrea rhizophorae cultivation was determined through monthly measures in shell length and weight. Seeds of C. rhizophorae were put in cages and suspended in rafts. Increase in height and weight (flesh and dry) of the oysters was measured. During ten months (July/98 to May/99), oyster shell reached an average of 37.6 mm in shell height and 3.0 g in flesh weight (the whole animal). High mortality rates were registered and could be related to the high salinity water and to high predation observed, especially by flatworms Stylochophana divae and snails Cymatium parthenopeum, as well as fouling organisms such as barnacles, Serpulidae polychaetes and seed of the same species.

Proximate composition and fatty acid content of the mangrove oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae along the year seasons BABT
Martino,Ricardo Cavalcanti; Cruz,Gracinda Maria da.
Mangrove oysters, Crassostrea rhizophorae were collected at the mangrove of "Barra de Guaratiba" district, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the aim to determine the proximate composition and fatty acid content. Along the year seasons no statistical (P>0.05) difference was observed in the values of moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and ash. They were 82.0%; 9.7%; 1.7%; 3.2%, in average, respectively. However, glycogen was significantly (P<0.05) higher in spring (4.4%) and winter (4.2%) samples, than in summer (2.7%) and autumn (2.9%), samples. Saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids were respectively, the most important fatty acids in oysters, with the palmitic acid (16:0), being the major fatty acid. This study, demonstrated that this...

Sur un sporozoaire parasite de Crassotrea rhizophorae (Guilding) ArchiMer
Comps, Michel; Grizel, Henri; Tige, Gilbert.
Along the French Guiana coast, mainly in the Monsinéry River, there are populations of natural oysters belonging to the species Crassostrea rhizophorae (Guilding). Within the scope of the growth of oyster farming in Guiana, we researched possible parasites of these oysters that are still little studied. This work, conducted based on living and set samples, allowed us to highlight the presence of nematops spores.

The state of the art of IFREMER in tropical aquaculture ArchiMer
Calvas, Jacques.
IFREMER, a French governmental agency, is engaged in research on tropical aquaculture since 1971, with the aims to develop new activities in French overseas territories and to export French technology to foreign countries. With 80 searchers and technicians the "Centre Oceanologique du Pacifique" is the main IFREMER's centre involved in tropical aquaculture. The research has been focused on the complete control of the whole cycle: constitution of broodstock, maturation and reproduction, larval rearing, and grow-out.
